Baking Powder Bisquits


2 cups flour 4 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar 2 teaspoons sugar
1/2 cup shortening 2/3 cup milk
Optional: 3/4 cup grated cheddar cheese


Sift dry ingredients into bowl. Cut in shortening. (At this time add the grated cheese if desired). Make a well in center: add milk all at once. Stir quickly with fork just til dough follows fork around bowl. Turn out onto lightly floured surface (Dough should be soft). Knead gently 10-12 times. Roll or pat dough 1/2 inch thick. Cut with bisquit cutter or glass. Bake on ungreased baking sheet at 450 deg.F. for 10 to 12 minutes. Makes approx. 12 bisquits.
